Australia's Off-Leash Dog Beaches: The Verified List
Most "dog beach" lists online are copied from other lists, and dogs get fined, or worse, when the hearsay turns out to be wrong. This list is different in one important way: every beach on it is a council-designated off-leash area, checked against the councils' own open data rather than someone's blog post. The catch to know about is timing. Some of these beaches are off-leash all day, every day. Others are off-leash only at set times, typically mornings and evenings, and the hours change with seasons and council reviews. We flag which is which below, but the sign at the sand is always the final word.
New South Wales

Sydney's northern beaches keep their dog beach on the calm side. Rowland Reserve sits on Pittwater at Bayview, sheltered water and room to run, and it is the best-known off-leash sand in the north.

Queensland

Brisbane's dog beach, on the tidal flats at Nudgee. At low tide the sand goes on forever, which dogs rate considerably higher than humans do.

Western Australia

How do you know these beaches are really off-leash?
Because we checked them against council designations, not other websites. Every beach on this list appears as a designated dog off-leash area in the relevant council's own published data, from Northern Beaches Council to the City of Joondalup. That is also why this list is shorter than most: we only include what we can verify.
What does "off-leash at set times" mean?
Some councils allow dogs off the leash all day, others only during set windows, typically early morning and evening, with tighter rules in summer. Sirius Cove, Station Beach, Kyeemagh, Sandridge, Brighton and Altona are all timed. The hours change with seasons and council reviews, so treat the sign at the beach as the final word.
Which dog beaches are off-leash all day?
Of the twelve here: Rowland Reserve and Greenhills in Sydney, Nudgee in Brisbane, The Spit on the Gold Coast, and Floreat and Whitfords in Perth are designated off-leash without published time restrictions. Even at those, on-site signage can add shared-use rules, so a quick look at the sign is never wasted.
Can I take my dog to Bondi or the other famous beaches?
Generally no. Most of the famous ocean beaches, Bondi included, prohibit dogs entirely, and the fines are real. That is exactly why the designated beaches on this list matter: they are the places where the run on the sand is legal, not tolerated.
